Commercial Pig Farming vs the Farm, Park & Wild Way

Pigs are fabulous animals and if reared well and with respect the resulting pork will taste amazing. However far too many pigs spend their short lives in pain and misery. Let’s start with a sow.
In commercial farming conditions she is a breeding machine and little more. Once introduced to the boar she is expected to be pregnant within days. From here she’s often back to an indoor sty on a concrete floor with her sisters. If she’s lucky the floor will be strewn with straw. Three weeks after her piglets are born they are taken away and our sow is re-introduced to the boar as soon as possible. It seems to us that the only one getting anything positive from these methods is the boar!!!
Farm, Park & Wild sows differ because they are re-introduced to the boar three whole months after her piglets have been weaned, allowing her plenty of time to recover. Moreover these piglets are weaned naturally. Thats to say, when the mothers milk drys up (as is would if they were the wild) the piglets naturally look for other sources of food.
Our pigs do all this in the open. Of course they have clean and dry shelter (known as arks) and plenty of open space to exhibit natural behaviours. Moreover, the piglets are free to roam and explore their world almost as they please. They’ll often gang up with other litters and go off to the horse paddock seeing which one is brave enough to get closest to Jasmin (the horse) before she scares them off – 10 minutes later you can be sure they are at it again.
This all adds up to a natural and happy life. The resulting meat is simply wonderful. Choose your cut of the finest pork – shoulder, belly pork, bacon, pork chops, sausages, leg – they’re all fabulous.
