Did you know that the mince meat you buy from supermarkets and the burgers, bolognese or any mince beef based dish you eat in most commercial settings – fast food, pubs etc – could easily be made from the meat of up to 400 different cows. 400!! So if you’ve ever wondered why companies recommend that such meat is not served pink, now you know.

We make our burgers from a single cut of beef from one cow, as a consequence our burgers can be served pink and are therefore packed full of flavour and you know they are free of any nasty additives and preservatives.

The scandal of the British fishing industry!

Please think about this for a minute. We were talking to a fisherman last week about the decline of the British fishing industry and we learnt a startling fact. This man (we’re not going to name him) is a third generation fisherman in East Anglia. He spends the winter long lining for herring - a hard and dangerous job, but what happens when back at the quay. At the morning auction he receives on average 38 pence per KILO for his herring. 38 Pence from the fish wholesalers on the dockside.

Within a matter of hours (minutes in some cases) those same fish are on sale at the market for £5.80 per kilo. £5.80!!! That’s 1526% mark up for doing little more than driving the fish to the customer market.

We also heard of the furry of many wholesalers when the quay price is pushed up.

So the next time you hear or read about Britain’s fishermen having a hard time, think on, would you do such a hard and dangerous job for pennys? Because that’s what they get.

Maybe worth thinking about when you’re tucking into your kippers.

AAAA

The Last Significant Change….remember these words people.

Consider if you will the much misunderstood practice of commercial food labelling. See if you can identify with this scenario. You’ve picked up a foodstuff in the supermarket, checked out the label and seen the words ‘Produced in the UK’ bought whatever it was and felt jolly pleased with yourself. I know I have.

However, your British pride might be slightly dented after I impart the following key piece of information.

Whatever it was you bought can legally claim to be made in this country as long as the ‘last significant change’ to that item happen on our shores.

So perhaps you bought sausages or chicken in breadcrumbs, or a ready meal with a picture of a farmer on the front.

Those sausages could well be made from cheap imported pork as long as they were turned into sausages here.

That chicken could be from lord only knows where, perhaps intensive poultry sheds in Brazil or Thailand (where an increasing amount of our imported chicken comes from) but as long as it was crumbed and packed here its ‘Produced in the UK’ status is totally legitimate – in the eyes of the law anyway.

As for that ready meal. EVERYTHING contained within could be from anywhere in the world as long as it’s ‘readiness’ was done here it’s OK to claim ‘Produced in the UK’

My Favourite however is ‘Wiltshire Cured Bacon’. That’s got to be bacon from Wiltshire right? WRONG. Wiltshire refers to the method of curing, not the lovely county. Cheap imported meat is being passed off as quality UK produce everywhere you look. Please don’t fall for it.

Farm, Park & Wild’s meat boxes, game boxes and seasonal ingredients are most definitely from the UK. Provenance is at the heart of everything we do and you will taste the difference.

Eat well and check the label, but even then think twice.

There are some amazing farming & food TV shows out there right now.

Lets start with Jimmys Food Factory. Jimmy Doherty investigates what really goes into our supermarket food by setting up his own food factory to recreate processed ‘food’. This week saw Jimmy having a stab at square sandwich ham. You know the stuff ,that rather whiffy pre-pack nastiness masquerading as a pork product. Truth is it is made from pork, well mechanically reclaimed pork anyway with lots and lots of added water, flavouring and some lovely colouring. mmmmmmm. NOT!

Next up is an amazing TV series by Alex Riley, Britain’s Really Disgusting Food. Alex uncovers the nightmares of the British food industry. It’s a real eye opener. Like Jimmy’s programme the series investigates the difference between what’s on the label and what you are really eating.

On to better fare. We love Valentine Warner and his programme What To Eat Now. If like us you like eating seasonally and using sustainable ingredients then this is the show for you. Valentine clearly cares and is passionate about what he does and what he eats.

Farm, Park & Wild is committed to helping customers eating the Valentine way. We have some real issues with processed food, but by eating seasonally and really thinking about what we are eating we can address a whole host of issues – general health, sustainability and climate change for starters.

Farm, Park & Wild’s unique seasonal dinner party menu, our meat boxes, game & seafood boxes will help you on your way.

Eat well.

Apparently there is going to be a shortage of quality Christmas turkeys this year. Delve a little deeper into the story and we find that the source is Kelly’s Turkeys. Kelly’s are undoubtedly fabulous farmers and they have built an amazing business, however their Christmas turkeys are rather expensive - mmmmmmmm, wonder why this story hit the headlines in a recessionary year?

http://tinyurl.com/yadgbr6

Farm, Park & Wild’s TurkeyCam allows you too see our Christmas Turkeys live from the farm (during the hours of daylight anyway, the budget couldn’t run to infa-red technology). Please have a look and you can be confident in the provenance of your Christmas Turkey.
